- My parents came to the US on July 4th, 1995. They originally only planned on coming to visit friends but decided to stay.
- My sister was born on July 15th, 1996.
- I was born on February 9th, 2001.
- These photos range from 1995 until 2004.
One of my mom’s first jobs was at the Hampton Inn in Springdale. she was 21 years old and worked as housekeeper. For these jobs, she had to go under another name.
Mom and other Housekeepers
1997, my mom was 22. She still worked at the Hampton Inn. They were celebrating Mother’s Day. My mom had just given birth to my other sister, Alejandra. My dad would take care of her while my mom went to work.
Dad & boombox
Taken by my mom in 1995 while she was pregnant. Their first apartment. The chair was the only “furniture” in their living room. Otherwise, everything in the house came with the apartment.
Dad & Uncles (Eureka Springs)
This was taken at the Christ in Eureka Springs. This was not their first time to Eureka but on this trip, they went with the whole family. My uncles were visiting from Texas.
Dad & Uncles (backyard party)
My uncles were visiting from Texas and my aunt came from Mexico. During the summer. I was born at this point and it was the first time my uncles had met me.
Mom in Kitchen, portrait
This was at their first apartment. My dad took these photo of my mom making caldo de res. There was little decor in the apartment. My mom was pregnant during this time and had morning sickness.
It was the 4th of july in 1997. My mom went with her coworkers from the Hampton Inn to celebrate. This would be their second year anniversary in the United States (they arrived on July 4th of 1995).
Dad, Reebok Hoodie
This was a couple of months after they first got here. Alejandra wasn’t born yet and they had just gotten their first apartment on their own. It was winter time, possibly February of 1996.
Dad, chicken plant
My dad worked at Cargill in 2000. This was a little before I was born. He worked in the freezers so he had to be wrapped up like this. My dad worked for chicken plants for many many years. He occasionally had other jobs, but he always went back to the chicken plants.
Mom + Dad, first winter
My mom was pregnant and throwing up often. The camera was put on the window with a timer to take the picture. This was also in their first apartment.
This was shortly after my sister, Alejandra, was born. It was still summertime and my aunt had come to visit. This picture was taken at Lake Atalanta in Rogers in 1996.
Mom + Alejandra, park
This picture was taken on a sunday in 1997 at Hickory Creek. My mom’s older sister made the sweater my mom is wearing.
Mom, the yellow house
This picture was taken on my sister’s 8th birthday. My mom was 28 years old. The party was at my godmother's house.
