Why Are They Still Talking About Ferguson?

“When the cameras left, everybody forgot”
-Tory Russel, activist.

Flip through the papers stacked on the table of stories unread,
Read the headline, see the picture;
“Why are they still talking
about Ferguson?”

Why would they still be talking about
An unarmed black boy who was killed by an officer;
Why would they still be talking about
How nothing has changed since

Why would they still be talking about
How six activists involved in the protests for him
Have been killed
With no one suspecting foul play

Two found dead in torched cars,
Four ruled suicides,
No foul play in question;
Why are they still talking about Ferguson?

How can you say there is no connection
When cars are burned down
A man is hanging from a tree,
Dangling back and forth like a pendulum

An innocent boy was killed,
Unarmed and afraid,
Why am I meant to accept this as reality?
Why are they still talking about Ferguson?

Someone left a python in the reverend’s car last night,
Hissing in its uniform, holding out a taser,
A threat on its lips,
A threat in its presence;

Why are they still talking about Ferguson?
An 18-year-old boy
Walks towards an officer “menacingly”
Unarmed, unknowing…undead;

If officers are threatened to kill
By a teenage boy walking,
I think they need further training;
Why are they still talking about Ferguson?

Run their cars off the side of the road,
Nearly hit their teenage daughter-with a bullet,
Vandalize their homes;
Why are they still talking about Ferguson?

Black lives don’t matter here,
Black lives are thrown in the trash here,
Black lives are running out of time here;
Why are they still talking about Ferguson?

“The Heart of Her History”

The heart of her history isn’t a mystery; it defines her every being.

They were queens, she is a queen.

They stood tall in bondage, she stands tall in bondage.

They fought for their people, she fights for her people.

She can not be defined, chained, or denied.

Everything she needs is in inside

The strength from her pain begins to rise, cause God is in her midst, surprise!

She knows who she is no matter what they assume from the outside.

This is the heart of her history, every part of her being
